The Detroit Red Wings have recalled veteran defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins ahead of Monday’s game against the New Jersey Devils.
NHL teams need a fresh lineup, and for the Detroit Red Wings, who are first in their division, it rings true more than ever.
The team has recalled veteran defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins today. With the move, the team has placed forward Elmer Soderblom, a bottom-six forward, on the injured reserve. This is the first time the Red Wings have recalled Gustafsson this year, and he could utilize this to garner more attention to his game when March rolls around.
Gustafsson will join the team soon as they take on the New Jersey Devils in Monday’s game at the Devils’ home in the Prudential Center.
It’ll be a bout between two top teams in the NHL, as the Devils are second in the Metropolitan Division, running hot with Sheldon Keefe leading the way.
The Detroit Red Wings call up 515-game veteran Erik Gustafsson
Gustafsson hasn’t suited up for the Red Wings once this year due to the fact that his spot in the lineup had been claimed by prospects who were promoted.
Now, he’ll have a chance to prove to himself and other NHL clubs who could be interested in his services down the road (should the team exercise a trade option) that he’s still a capable blueliner.
The former 93rd overall pick in the 4th round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers has played 10 games in the AHL and scored 8 points (8 A) with the Griffins.
Could this be a chance for him to make an impact, or will it be a regular call-up?
The Red Wings signed the defenseman to a two-year, $2 million AAV (average annual value) contract in 2024.
