The Edmonton snapped a three-game win streak on Saturday night, and it couldn’t have come against a better team.

It was a rematch of the last two Stanley Cup Finals as the Oilers took on the Florida Panthers in an emotional contest. Reports going into the game said that the Edmonton organization wasn’t exactly thrilled with how the Panthers handled their win, and the team had called up tough-guy prospect Connor Clattenburg for the match.

Many expected some fireworks to erupt, and while the game had its physical moments, the Oilers made their presence known on the scoreboard. Edmonton got four goals past Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky within the first 26 minutes of the game, prompting Panthers coach Paul Maurice to pull the star netminder.

Jack Roslovic notched a pair of goals, with Mattias Ekholm and Vasily Podkolzin adding two more. Connor McDavid and Matt Savoie iced the 6-3 win with a couple of empty-netters late in the game.

Getting Bobrovsky out of the net was a big accomplishment for this team, considering how good he was in last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

“That’s rare to do,” Roslovic said after the game. “Might not have been his night for tonight, but, you know, just keep trying to pound goalies.

“[Stuart Skinner was amazing]. It’s an awesome feeling to have a goalie back there who stands up like that and plays the way he did tonight.”

“There was a lot of great individual efforts tonight.”

Stuart Skinner had some shaky moments in this one, allowing the Panthers to battle back from 4-1 to 4-3 in the second period, but it was an overall solid performance for the Edmonton native. Skinner finished the game with a .921 save percentage and turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced.

There was no question that he outdueled Bobrovsky at the other end of the ice.

“A couple tough breaks in the second period to make it a tight game,” Skinner said. “Going into the third period, our job was to push back…. It’s a little bit of a rollercoaster at times, and we were able to handle it. That’s my job, that’s everyone’s job.”

“Just finding our rhythm, start finding our play.”

It wasn’t a perfect game by any means for the Oilers. Though they had a good start to the night and built an early lead, things started to lag in the second and third periods. They were clinging to a lead and seemingly sat back a bit too much, allowing the Panthers to make it a close game.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch assessed his team’s play against the defending champions.

“I thought our guys were really focused and did the little things that we needed to do,” Knoblauch said. “[Skinner] played really good tonight, especially in the third period, they had some chances and we needed some saves… We needed him, and he rose to the occasion.”

The Oilers now have a 10-9-5 record through 24 games this season. They sit just below the playoff line in the Western Conference with 25 points, but they are just four points back of the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks.

Edmonton will get a little break, but will finally return to the Alberta capital for a home game against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
