Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen received an automatic one-game suspension following a boarding incident that resulted in a second game misconduct within the past three games, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday.

Rantanen was ejected from the Stars’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday after getting a five-minute major penalty for boarding the Flames’ Matt Coronato near the end of the second period. The 29-year-old winger, who leads Dallas in scoring with 28 points, will not play in the Stars’ road game Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

The automatic one-game suspension kicked in as Rantanen violated Rule 23.6 under the physical infractions category, which penalizes a player who incurs a total of two game misconduct penalties before playing in 41 consecutive regular-season games without such penalty. Rantanen received one Tuesday near the end of the Stars’ home loss to the New York Islanders when he boarded defenseman Alexander Romanov.

An NHL spokesperson told The Athletic on Sunday that while the automatic suspension doesn’t necessarily preclude more supplemental discipline, none would be forthcoming in this instance with Rantanen. It is the first suspension of Rantanen’s career. Coronato, who scored a power-play goal on Saturday, was bloodied on the play but returned in the third period and finished the game.

Because of the 15 penalty minutes garnered Tuesday against the Islanders and 22 more racked up Saturday, Rantanen has 57 to currently lead the NHL. The most he has had in his career was 85 in 2022-23 with the Colorado Avalanche. He is in his first full season with Dallas after the Stars acquired him from the Carolina Hurricanes on March 7.
