Cole Hutson led the Boston University Terriers to another win on Saturday night.
The Washington Capitals prospect defenseman scored two goals, including the overtime game-winning goal in BU’s 4-3 win over Northeastern. The No. 18-ranked Terriers lost to No. 12-ranked Northeastern the night prior and had lost two games in a row overall.
Hutson’s first of the night was a highlight-reel individual effort to put the Terriers up 2-0 in the first period. After making a one-man zone entry down the left flank, Hutson collected his own shot’s rebound and wrapped it around the Northeastern net for the goal.
The Terriers would go on to cede two different two-goal leads to the Huskies, leading to overtime at Agganis Arena. With just 52 seconds remaining in the extra frame, Hutson picked up the puck in the neutral zone after a Northeastern turnover and turned on the jets.
Hutson beat all five other players on the ice down into Northeastern’s zone and finished the breakaway chance glove side on goaltender Quentin Sigurdson. He then raced to center ice and celebrated with his arms outstretched in front of the Huskies’ bench.
Hutson, playing in his sophomore season at BU, now has 18 points (7g, 11a) in 14 games, which leads the Terriers. He is also the highest-scoring defenseman in the nation, one point ahead of Minnesota-Duluth blueliner Ty Hanson.
Among all NCAA players, Hutson ranks tied for 14th in scoring with a group of five players that also includes the consensus number-one overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, Penn State’s Gavin McKenna. McKenna has played two more games than Hutson.
Jesus Christmas.
Don’t be surprised if this 2nd rounder makes the NHL. But continue to be surprised he fell to the 2nd round. Forever and always. pic.twitter.com/07FIQJAaZX
