Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov may want a change of scenery, but a new report shows that Carolina is setting a huge price for his services which could keep him in a place he doesn’t want to stay in.With the Carolina Hurricanes currently atop the Metropolitan Division with a 14-5-2 record, they are still missing one of their key contributors in Jaccob Slavin, and have been driven by the likes of Sebastian Aho as well as youngsters Seth Jarvis and Jackson Blake.
One player who is having a fairly decent season all things considered is Andrei Svechnikov, but his point production has been a bit subpar for his standards, as he only has 12 points in 21 games.
What actually led Andrei Svechnikov to be open to a trade in Carolina
I understand that the inference was made to the Carolina Hurricanes that if they wanted to trade him, he wouldn’t be upset about it, that he would be open to the idea.
However, Friedman also mentioned that even if the veteran forward had wanted a deal, the Hurricanes were going to be making it hard for teams to acquire him.
I heard there were some teams that called the Hurricanes and they were told ‘we still consider this a cornerstone player, and this is not something we want to do, but if you’re going to ask us, you’re going to have to make a monster offer.’ Now things have cooled down, he’s back on the first line.
It seems that cooler heads have prevailed for now, but if Svechnikov struggles or isn’t satisfied with his usage, there might not be much he can do about it for now. Carolina is in a great spot and they aren’t going to mess around with their lineup.
What a ‘monster price’ on Svechnikov really means for teams like the Maple Leafs
Toronto would no doubt need to give up at least one of either Easton Cowan or Ben Danford, then in addition to that you may have Carolina wanting that ever-important 2028 first-round pick as well.
Not to mention there’s Nick Robertson, who was at one point a trade surety and now has played himself into a top-six spot in the lineup.
Plus you’re also asking teams to pay nearly $8-million for the next few seasons, and while a rising cap helps that a bit, the initial price and payout is going to be substantial.
Carolina is trying their best to field a team that can win them a Stanley Cup, and they clearly believe Svechnikov is a part of that plan and if teams are going to pry him away — they may need to think twice.
