An NHL Insider has dropped an exciting report that links Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Detroit Red Wings.
With a disappointing start to the NHL season, the Vancouver Canucks are one team that is currently planning to sell assets.
One team that could benefit from an on-the-fly retool or sell-off at that time that is reportedly coming up is the Red Wings.
Ironically, if this trade were to happen, this would be a way for Steve Yzerman to correct a Ken Holland mistake from 2018, when they took Filip Zadina 6th overall, over the former Michigan Wolverine defenseman Hughes.
The Red Wings would lament that decision, as Zadina is now playing hockey in Switzerland, while Hughes is an elite NHL defenseman.
Hughes played for the Wolverines in Ann Arbor and seemed like he would’ve been a safe bet. Instead, Holland opted for Zadina compared to Hughes, who scored 24 assists as a freshman with Michigan.
Also on his resume: Hughes played for the US National Development Team in Plymouth, Michigan.
Zadina wouldn’t pan out, despite the fact that either player’s career could’ve turned out differently.
Hughes has developed into an elite NHL defenseman for the Canucks, who has become the leader in total points and assists for a defenseman, scoring 300 assists in 369 games.
Quinn Hughes’ most suggested trade spot is the Red Wings
Several insiders have echoed the statement of Detroit being Hughes’ number-one suggested destination, and Red Wings fans could not be happier.
Hughes would have his ideal defensive partner in former Calder Trophy winner Moritz Seider.
