The Detroit Red Wings have an opportunity to sign a former member of an Original Six rival who just hit free agency after recovering from surgery, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

With Simon Edvinsson away from the lineup due to an illness, the blue line is struggling.

According to a new report from the NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, a former second-round pick is eyeing a return to the league after getting an offseason surgery that prevented him from taking part in the start of the season.

Red Wings Could Target Former Leafs Defenseman Returning to the NHL After Surgery

On X, Friedman announced that Travis Dermott, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 34th overall pick in 2015, is looking to return to the NHL after getting shoulder surgery in July:

“Travis Dermott – who has played 348 NHL games – had left shoulder surgery to correct some recurring problems on July 23.

Now healthy, he is training and skating in Mississauga, looking for a landing spot to resume his career.

Good luck to him”

Dermott, 28, played only 80 games in the past three years, often dealing with injuries that hurt his development.

The six-foot defenseman scored 16 goals and 46 assists in 348 NHL regular season games for the Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, Edmonton Oilers, and Minnesota Wild.

At this point of his career, Dermott is likely to return on a PTO or in the AHL.

At this cost, a few teams could be interested in signing him, including the Detroit Red Wings.
