Leafs practice notes: Joseph Woll projected to start vs. Blue Jackets, Brandon Carlo resumes skating
Woll did not attend the Maple Leafs’ optional skate, but was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice. The 27-year-old has posted a .905 save percentage to go along with a 1-2-1 record in four appearances this season. Woll was pulled from Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens during the second period and took umbrage with the decision.“He was so pissed off at me for pulling him the other night but I like that. He wanted to be there and fight, and that’s good,” Berube said of Woll after Tuesday’s practice.
“I was having fun battling out there,” Woll said. “Of course, anytime you get out of the net, you’re not happy, but I thought we still had a chance to come back. I thought we were getting some momentum. It ended up not going our way.”
Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy will return to the lineup for Wednesday’s game. Matthews missed five games due to a lower-body injury sustained against the Boston Bruins on November 11. Matthews, Knies and Roy all skated together during line rushes at Tuesday’s practice.“I feel great. I feel a lot better,” Knies said Wednesday morning via TSN’s Mark Masters. “I’m just excited to get back in the lineup. It sucks watching. You just want to be out there to help the guys so happy to do that today.”
Roy missed three games due to an upper-body injury.
Jacob Quillan, Dakota Joshua, Matias Maccelli and Sammy Blais are the projected scratches. Quillan has been removed from the Leafs’ roster page and will likely be sent down to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies with Matthews and Roy returning from IR.
