In a season that hasn’t given Calgary Flames fans much to be happy about, it would seem that a bit of good news has come the ownership’s way. CNBC released its official NHL team valuations for 2025, and the Calgary Flames moved up a spot.

Last season, the Calgary Flames sat in 18th place, and after finishing 17th in the league standings, they find themselves in that same spot by valuation in CNBC’s report. Calgary’s jump can in large part be attributed to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ fall as they dropped from 17th to 22nd. This moved the Flames up to where they are now.

Many teams saw significant valuation increases thanks to the NHL generating plenty of new revenue. It negotiated a new deal with Rogers for national Canadian media rights back in April. The agreement is worth approximately $7.79 billion over 12 years. The NHL’s current US national media rights deals with Walt Disney and Warner Bros. are expected to run through the 2027–28 NHL season. Those deals are currently worth a combined $630M and are expected to see a big increase in their next iteration.

One team that saw a substantial increase in value were the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers jumped the Boston Bruins to become the 5th-most-valuable team in the NHL at $3.1 billion. Not necessarily surprising, considering they currently host the NHL’s biggest superstar, Connor McDavid and have been to the Stanley Cup Finals two years in a row.

What does this mean for the Calgary Flames?

Nothing in CNBC’s report should come as much of a surprise to Flames fans. Teams that had successful seasons generally saw larger increases in value, while teams that struggled saw smaller. This is a situation where the team’s current state can clearly be reflected in this report.

They are middle of the pack, showing little hope for movement in either direction this season. With playoffs more than likely out of the question, the next big thing coming down the pipe for the Calgary Flames that could move the needle will probably be the new arena. Whether that ends up being enough to push the Calgary Flames in a positive direction both on the ice and off remains to be seen.
