Jakob Chychrun is the hottest player in the National Hockey League.
Chychrun’s latest feat, sending a one-timer over the shoulder of goaltender Joseph Woll, was the game-winner in the Washington Capitals’ 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and put Chychrun’s name in the franchise’s record books.
With the goal, Chychrun has now scored in five straight games and tied Al Iafrate and Robert Picard for the longest all-time point streak by a Capitals defenseman at 10 games.
Connor McMichael started the play by carrying the puck back up to the point and finding Ryan Leonard on the left half wall. Leonard then snapped a perfect feed to a rotating Chychrun in the right faceoff circle, and he fired the Capitals into a 3-2 lead with just 3:56 remaining in the third period.
“SCCCCOOOAAARRRRR, Jakob Chychrun!” Monumental Sports Network’s Joe Beninati screamed. “A record-tying bullet.”
Chychrun is the NHL’s top goal-scoring defenseman with 10 goals in 25 games, one more goal than Colorado Avalanche star rearguard Cale Makar. He is now also the second-fastest defenseman in Capitals history to reach the 10-goal mark in a season, behind only Sylvain Cote (23 GP in 1992-93).
“Yeah, I’ll take it,” Chychrun told Monumental’s Al Koken postgame. “It’s been a fun run. Boys are playing really well, everybody is contributing. We’re going to need that as we get deep into the year.”
While Chychrun gave props to the rest of his teammates for their recent high-scoring ways, no player, outside of captain Alex Ovechkin, has matched his output. Since the start of his point streak on November 11 against the Carolina Hurricanes, Chychrun’s 13 points (7g, 6a) are tied with Ovechkin’s 13 points (8g, 5a) for the most points on the team in that span.
“I just try to find opportunities to get open for them and just try to be there to capitalize on opportunities, find seams, attack when it’s available,” Chychrun said. “I think when you do all the right things, and you’re working hard to support your teammates and generate opportunities, sometimes the puck finds you. As long as we continue to work hard for one another, I think good things happen.”
Chychrun is on pace to obliterate the career highs in goals and points that he set last season, when he registered 47 points (20g, 27a) in 74 games. After his goal on Friday, he is tracking towards a 33-goal, 75-point year over a full 82-game schedule.
Only four defensemen in Capitals history, Larry Murphy (81), Kevin Hatcher (79), Mike Green (76), and John Carlson (75), have recorded 75 points in a single season. Just two, Hatcher (34) and Green (31), have eclipsed the 30-goal mark. Green holds the NHL record for the longest goal-scoring streak by a defenseman at eight games, set during the 2008-09 campaign.
Chychrun is also leading the Capitals in average ice time per game (23:24), shots on goal (87), and shot attempts (190).
“Yeah, it’s unbelievable,” Tom Wilson said. “He’s playing so well, but I don’t think it really surprises any of us. He’s got so much raw talent and the ability to kind of do whatever he wants. So when he’s on his game, it’s dangerous, and we’re more than happy to have him on our side. It’s one of those guys you’re lucky to have in your organization and part of the future just because he can make so much happen.”
“I think the thing about Chychy is he’s always attacking,” McMichael added. “Every time he gets it, he wants to score, and I think that’s what makes him great. You look at tonight, he was able to find a seam and find a soft spot and rifle that one in the back of the net. I think that’s what great goal scorers do. You see that with Ovi a little bit, just being able to find those soft pockets for guys to find him.”
Chychrun’s pairing with Matt Roy has also dominated the opposition five-on-five, with the Capitals scoring 20 goals in their minutes and allowing only five.
