When a top 20 goal scorer faces a rookie making his NHL debut, it typically doesn’t end well for the rookie. Facing off against Carolina Hurricanes center Seth Jarvis, Winnipeg Jets netminder Thomas Milic was welcomed to the big leagues the hard way.

The Hurricanes (15-7-2) faced the Jets (12-11-0) on Friday night for the second time in a week, looking to repeat their success from earlier. Led by Jarvis’ second career hat trick, the Canes managed a 5-1 victory for their second victory over the Jets in seven days.

“I’ve just been focusing on shooting the puck more,” Jarvis said. “My confidence hasn’t really wavered, and I still believe every shot should go in.”

A first-period goal started Jarvis’s night, and two third-period goals sealed the hat trick against his hometown team. The Canes’ success wasn’t all because of Jarvis, as third-string netminder Brandon Bussi made staggering saves all game, preventing the Jets from ever taking the lead.

Bussi made just his seventh start of the season due to the injury to goalie Pyotr Kochetkov. Bussi earned the nod and made the most of it. Tied at 1-1, Bussi was caught in a 1-on-1 during a Jets power play. Bussi made a diving save, knocking the puck off his foot while facedown and stalling the Jets’ attack, giving the Canes the momentum they needed to pull ahead.

“It’s the biggest play of the game,” said head coach Rod Brind’Amour. “You know, it could have went, then you’re down, and this might have been different.”

Though it was his NHL debut, Milic held his own through the first 40 minutes. The Canes finished the first two periods with 20 shots on goal, but only snuck one in. He looked to replicate this in the third period, but instead, he had more of a “welcome to the NHL” moment, as the Canes scored four times in the final 20 minutes, three of which he allowed.

With a little over eight minutes left in the third period, Canes winger Jordan Martinook found the net with a one-timer. Less than a minute after that, Jarvis scored his second off an assist from defenseman K’Andre Miller to put the Canes up two. In an attempt to come back, the Jets pulled Milic, which led to an open net for Jarvis to record his third goal of the night. Down three, Milic was put back in, but the Canes weren’t through just yet. With less than a minute left to play, defenseman Alexander Nikishin lit the lamp with a slapshot for the Hurricanes’ fifth and final goal.

Next, the Canes will face off against the Calgary Flames at the Lenovo Center on Sunday, Nov. 30. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m.
