The Carolina Hurricanes got back in the win column on Friday night, routing the Winnipeg Jets with a 5-1 victory at the Lenovo Center. The Canes snapped their short skid by scoring four unanswered goals in the third period. Two of those goals came off Seth Jarvis’s stick to go with his tally in the opening period to complete the second hat trick of his career.
Brandon Bussi earned his sixth win of the season against the Jets, facing only 13 shots, but stopping 12 of them. His biggest save of the night came on a short-handed breakaway against Kyle Connor, keeping it a 1-1 game early in the third before his group broke it open. Without confirmation as to who will start, it’s hard to argue against Bussi getting another look against the Flames.
On the Other Side: Calgary Flames
Despite their offensive shortcomings a season ago, the Calgary Flames nearly broke through for a surprise playoff run. Ultimately, they fell short, but not without a few standout performances. Chief among them was rookie netminder Dustin Wolf, who was the runner-up for the Calder Trophy and eighth in the Vezina race, while Nazem Kadri finished with 35 goals and 67 points.
This surprising season made the Flames hold still on adding or subtracting too much from their roster. They forked over good money to extend several players. Connor Zary inked a shorter three-year deal, while captain Mikael Backlund signed on for two more years. The big money was awarded to Wolf, who extended for seven years at $7.5 million per season.
It has not worked in the Flames’ favor so far. Calgary sits at the bottom of the division and second from the bottom in the league with just 21 points. Wolf has been a shadow of himself, while the offense continues to struggle to find the back of the net. However, they enter tonight with wins in four of their last five, including two of three on their current five-game road trip.
Last season: The Hurricanes swept the season series. They visited Calgary early last season during their State Fair trip, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and holding on to win, 4-2. The Flames came to town in March with the dads and mentors in attendance. After trading a goal apiece through 60 minutes, Sebastian Aho notched his fifth overtime winner of the season to take the second point.
Flames to Watch
Rasmus Andersson: With the Flames off to a slow start, the trade rumblings are only going to get louder over the next few months. The top name available on most lists is Andersson. A pending UFA at the end of the season, the right-shot defender is second on the team in scoring with 18 points, and his time in Calgary could be coming to an end before the trade deadline rolls around.
Blake Coleman: In that same vain, Coleman is another player whose name has floated around trade rumors, and for good reason. The two-time Stanley Cup champion knows a thing or two about playing meaningful hockey in May and June. Coleman is tied for the team lead with eight goals along with Matthew Coronato.
Hurricanes to Watch
Seth Jarvis: After a hat trick on Friday night against his hometown team, all eyes will be on Jarvis to see how he follows his incredible performance. The Hurricanes’ leading goal scorer is among the league’s best with 15 goals, and he has found his touch again over the last week. I’m not expecting to see another hat trick, though could you imagine if he did it again.
Brandon Bussi: While the Canes’ starter for the game likely won’t be known until Rod Brind’Amour speaks to the media before the game, I believe that Bussi deserves a chance to start back-to-back games for the first time in the NHL. He has been far more consistent this season than Frederik Andersen, whose turn it would be if the rotation continues on Sunday.
