The Oilers rebounded with a 4-0 shutout against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday, but the bigger picture hasn’t changed as they remain third from bottom in the Pacific Division, especially with the 8–3 loss to Dallas earlier still fresh in the minds of the Edmonton faithful.
With the team struggling to find its rhythm, goaltending continues to be a major concern, sparking rumors that the Oilers might look to replace Stuart Skinner. An NHL insider has now offered some insight into the situation.
NHL Insider Sheds Light on Oilers’ Current Approach to Goaltending Options
Skinner is currently posting a 3.00 GAA and an .885 save percentage, while Calvin Pickard has a 4.04 GAA and an .847 save percentage, both well below NHL standards. Although Skinner recorded a shutout on Saturday, earlier in the week, he allowed four goals against Dallas before being replaced by Pickard, who also surrendered four.
During Saturday Headlines, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke down where things stand with Edmonton’s goalies. He said one game wasn’t going to suddenly change public opinion, but Skinner’s shutout did ease the noise “for a few hours.”
After the blowout loss to Dallas, Friedman admitted many people, including himself, felt it might be time for Edmonton to make a change for the sake of the team and for Skinner.
Friedman also addressed three major things. “No. 1, Skinner has not asked out. That did not happen, and a couple of people were wondering if that did happen this weekend. Tt did not happen,“ he said.
Second, he praised Skinner for showing up to an autograph signing at West Edmonton Mall on Thursday, despite fan frustration. Friedman joked that if it were him, he’d be “in witness protection,” giving Skinner credit for facing the fans.

Third, he added that the Oilers have made calls around the league, and teams with extra goalies, such as Columbus, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh, have reached out as well.
However, Friedman emphasized that Edmonton’s stance hasn’t changed. “They are not going to do it just to do it. They are not going to do what they believe is a lateral move. They would rather make no move than what they think would be a bad move or a panic move or a move just to do it,” Friedman said.
He concluded by noting that he does not believe the Oilers’ philosophy has changed at all, even though many were left wondering after the Dallas game earlier this week.
For now, it seems the Oilers aren’t planning any immediate changes in net. Their focus shifts to Tuesday’s matchup against the Minnesota Wild.
