The Philadelphia Flyers placed defenseman Adam Ginning on waivers today. The Flyers made the news official this afternoon as Ginning was recalled from his conditioning loan earlier in the month.

Ginning, who will turn 26 in January, played five games for the Flyers this season. The blueliner was in the opening night lineup against Florida on Oct. 9 and was dressed for three games (against Carolina, Florida, and Winnipeg). He appeared in one other game on Oct. 25 but was still looking to register his first point of the 2025-26 season. Although he played just over 12 minutes in his last two games, he had a season-high of 20:33 against Florida in Philadelphia’s home opener on Oct. 13. The extra minutes were a result of defenseman Cam York being injured, thus Ginning helped pick up some of the slack. Aside from his time with the Flyers this season, Ginning played five games for Lehigh Valley, earning an assist over that span.

A second-round pick (50th overall) in the 2018 draft, Ginning might be caught in a bit of a logistical log jam within the Flyers organization. The Flyers are looking fine with current lineup of defensemen at their disposal. Travis Sanheim, Cam York, Jamie Drysdale, and Nick Seeler were proverbial locks for the season. Meanwhile, Emil Andrae — after being yo-yoed a bit between the Flyers and Lehigh Valley — has found a fantastic landing pad alongside Drysdale now in the middle pairing. And both Noah Juulsen and Egor Zamula seem to be still in a battle for the sixth spot, meaning the seventh spot is also accounted for.

On top of all that, Philadelphia looks to be getting back Rasmus Ristolainen sooner than later. Ristolainen is skating but has yet to participate in any full-contact practices with the club. As well, Oliver Bonk is also skating again after suffering an injury in training camp that took obviously longer than expected to recover. There’s no word as to whether Ginning’s placement on waivers has anything to do with personnel matters or Ristolainen returning. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s claimed and then go from there. Ginning signed a two-year deal last June with Philadelphia which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $787,500. Currently he’s a Group 6 unrestricted free agent but, given that he has to play 64 games to remain a restricted free agent this year, it’s almost a certainty he’ll be exploring other options at year’s end.

The Flyers probably don’t want to rock the boat much with their lineup if they have to. The team is currently 6-2-2 in their last 10 games after victories over the Islanders in a shootout and New Jersey over the weekend. The Devils loss was New Jersey’s first regulation loss at home this season.
