Detroit Red Wings players endured a tough day at the 2025 World Championship.

Switzerland banked a 5-1 victory over central European neighbor Germany, captained by Moritz Seider, on May 15 in Group B action at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning Denmark. In Group A action, Marco Kasper’s Austrians fell, 5-1, to powerhouse Canada in Group A action at Avicii Arena in Stockholm. The international tournament runs through May 25.

The Swiss scored five consecutive goals en route to collecting three points to stand at 10 points overall four games into the event, handing Germany its first defeat.

It was the reverse for Kasper and Austria, which took a 1-0 lead over Canada 11:20 into the game, then surrendered the final five goals as the Canadians outshot the Austrians, 52-16. Kasper logged 17:43 of ice time, second-most among Austrian forwards and registered a minus-1 in plus/minus.

Germany’s loss ended a three-game win streak, with the Germans’ strong start coming against hockey underdogs Hungary, Kazakhstan and Norway.

Seider has one assist in four games. He last played in the tournament in 2023 (he was unable to do so in 2024 because he was a restricted free agent with the Wings and due a massive contract) when he had a goal and four assists in 10 games.

Germany has nine points at the halfway point of the round-robin preliminary round, good for third place. Austria has just two points, sitting in sixth place.

In other action, former Wings first-round draft pick Filip Zadina had an assist as his native Czechia routed Hungary, 6-1.
