According to NHL analyst Jeff Marek, Auston Matthews’ sudden usage of Bauer hockey gear is linked to the fact that he doesn’t have an endorsement currently in place.

He used to use Bauer equipment before making the switch, and has been seen recently back in the Bauer gear, with discussions about whether or not he was making a full change or testing the waters with some new equipment.

Inside Auston Matthews’ decision to test Bauer gear at practice

Jeff Marek, NHL analyst and host of The Sheet podcast, touched on the subject recently, as fans reached out to him inquiring about any news behind the sudden change.

Marek stated that Matthews’ switch has to do with an expired CCM deal, as well as trying to find something that works for him in the interim.

For everyone who reached out at Auston Matthews wearing Bauer gear – as I understand he is without a deal and exploring Bauer. We’ll see what happens.

Love you equipment freaks.

Right now this is written as a confirmed causal fact. Marek framed it ‘as I understand,’ not as an official statement from Matthews/CCM/Bauer.

Marek appreciated the niche question given that it’s a fairly under discussed topic when it comes to hockey players, and it’s a delicate balance of comfort and endorsement money that determines who wears what.

How equipment deals actually work for stars at Matthews’ level

Matthews would have been under contract with the brand during the term of the deal, and now that it has reportedly expired he is free to explore other companies.

Matthews would have been locked into a deal with the brand regardless if he started to feel like it was detrimental, and now with it expiring he is free to choose any company.

Going back to what feels best is what Matthews wants not only to get back into a rhythm but to also prevent himself from more injuries. If his equipment was giving him issues then it would factor into his on-ice performance.

Nobody is tied to a lifetime endorsement contract unless under special circumstances, and for a player like Matthews — who is trying to get back to a more consistent production level — switching back to familiar equipment might simply help him feel more comfortable and confident on the ice.
