After being spotted getting dinner together in New York City, Tate McRae and Jack Hughes drummed up a fair bit of fan speculation about if they’re ‘just friends’
Tate McRae and Jack Hughes were rumored to be dating after meeting up in public
Tate McRae, 22, and Jack Hughes’ relationship rumors did not last long as the pop megastar made a telling Instagram post.
Over top of a selfie, Tate popped her own song “NOBODY’S GIRL” with no additional context. The song was released on November 21, so it might just be a promotional post. However, the song’s message of independence could be quite the hint about her rumored relationship with the New Jersey Devils player.
The hotshot hockey player, 24, was spotted having dinner in Manhattan with Tate last week, drumming up questions about their status. Neither of the stars addressed the fan chatter, but Tate made an Instagram post on Monday that caught everyone’s attention.

In the song, Tate sings, “Got my career on my mind / Money drop in New York City / Look in the mirror, and I’m like ‘So hot, so smart, so witty.'”
In a photo sent in to Deuxmoi, Tate was pictured wearing a red top and sitting across from Jack, who is currently injured and unable to play with his team. The New Jersey center wore a beanie on the date as the pair ate dinner at Anton’s in Manhattan’s West Village. Later, Tate was pictured in a selfie wearing the same shirt with a fan.

Tate is known to love hockey
Jack’s NHL team was busy defending the beginning of what is stacking up to an amazing season for them. However, Jack cut his hand in a freak accident at a team dinner in Chicago. As a result, he was forced to undergo surgery and was expected to be out for about two months.
Tate is no stranger to hockey romance, either. In fact, she previously dated Jack’s rival Cole Sillinger, 22, who plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets. They met through mutual friends. After all, Tate’s family is notably entangled in hockey with her brother playing at the collegiate level.
Cole’s celebrity crush was actually Tate before they got together. “It was really funny — I was like ‘I can forever hold this over you ‘til the day you die, that I was your celebrity crush,'” Tate told Entertainment Tonight about Cole in 2022.
The rumors about the pair were never confirmed
However, in 2023, their relationship crumbled and they went their separate ways. While they didn’t initially address the split publicly, rumors of cheating on Cole’s part emerged. The NHL player cleared up the allegations, though, writing on Instagram, “All false my guy.”
Neither Jack or Tate’s representatives have responded to requests for comments on their possible relationship.
The New Jersey Devils take on the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at the Prudential Center in New Jersey at 7:00 p.m. Unfortunately, Jack is still out with his injury and will be unable to be on the ice. However, Tate’s ex Cole is currently projected to be in the mix for tonight’s lineup.
Notably, the New Jersey Devils have only lost two home games this season, which was against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday and the New York Islanders on November 10.
While Jack won’t be on the ice, his younger brother, Luke Hughes, 22, is projected to be in the lineup.
