Potsdam native and former Clarkson University hockey standout Craig Conroy has received a two-year contract extension as general manager of the Calgary Flames, the NHL and the Calgary organization announced Friday.
Conroy, 54, is now under contract with the Flames through the 2027-28 season. The Flames extended all of their senior hockey management staff, including President Don Maloney, Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Dave Nonis and Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant GM Brad Pascall for two years. Though the extensions were just announced, they were signed just prior to the start of the 2025-26 season.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this hockey club,” Conroy said in the team’s release. “We have made important strides the last two years, and I believe in the culture of this team. We are excited about the future, and we are all committed to do everything we can to bring success to this franchise.”
Conroy, a former Flames player who played for the team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2004, was named Calgary’s GM on May 23, 2023. The Flames finished 38-39-5 and in fifth place in the Pacific Division under new head coach Ryan Huska in Conroy’s first season as GM in 2023-24. In 2024-25, Calgary improved to 41-27-14 and placed fourth in the division.
The Flames, who haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2021-22 season, have struggled out of the gate this season, going 9-14-4 and are currently in last place in the division.
“We know we have some work to do and we’re really looking forward to it, but for me and my family, it’s a great day,” said Conroy of the extension. Conroy is married to Watertown native Jessica Conroy (Costanzo) and has three children.
Conroy had been Calgary’s assistant general manager for nine years prior to being hired as GM. He played nine seasons with the Flames and then retired as a player after the 2010-11 season. He also played for Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings.
“Behind the scenes there is so much more that goes on,” Conroy said when he was hired. “I just sat there and took it all in (as assistant GM). I was like a sponge. I’ve gotten to touch all aspects, so I have a good feel, in my mind, of what’s going on. Moving forward, the next step for me was this.”
During the past offseason, the Flames extended a pair of young talents with seven-year deals, inking goalie Dustin Wolf, 24, and winger Matt Coronato, 22.
“When we started this two-and-a-half years ago it was all about bringing in players, young players to add to that core and then that’s how we’re going to get better,” Conroy said.
Conroy first arrived in Calgary after being traded by St. Louis during the 2000-01 season. He’s now a longtime resident of Calgary.
The Flames’ senior hockey management group also includes Assistant General Manager Peter Hanlon, Special Advisor to the General Manager Jarome Iginla and Senior Director of Hockey Operations Mike Burke.
