Flyers vs. Penguins: The matchup

The Flyers and Penguins kick off the month of December with their second head-to-head matchup of the season thus far, the first being a 3-2 shootout win by the Flyers on Oct. 28. Including that win, Philadelphia is 5-0 in shootout contests this season on its way to a fourth-place position in the East’s Metropolitan Division with a 14-7-3 record and 31 points. The Flyers trail the New Jersey Devils by just two points for the top spot in a division where all eight teams have more wins than losses. The Metropolitan is the NHL’s only division that can make that claim.

The Penguins are two points shy of the Flyers in fifth place with their 12-7-5 record and 31 points. They will be in rebound mode in Philadelphia after taking a 7-2 loss at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday to fall to 4-5-3 over their past 12 contests. On the other side, the Flyers are winners of three straight and five of their past six.
