With plenty of reports regarding his future out in the rumor mill, the Chicago Blackhawks activated Laurent Brossoit and assigned him to Rockford for a conditioning stint.

The Chicago Blackhawks have officially activated and assigned goaltender Laurent Brossoit to the Rockford IceHogs. The Hawks granted Brossoit’s camp permission to seek a trade, and the next logical step is getting him some game action before any possible move. Now, a conditioning stint is on the docket for the 32-year-old with the Rockford IceHogs.

The Blackhawks originally signed Brossoit as a part of the massive veteran overhaul in the summer of 2024. Alongside the likes of Teuvo Teravainen, Tyler Bertuzzi, and others, Brossoit was brought in to potentially share the net with a struggling Petr Mrazek, allowing the likes of Arvid Soderblom and Drew Commesso to continue their development in the AHL.

However, Brossoit’s freak injury has kept him off the ice since signing in Chicago. Since then, the Blackhawks watched Soderblom take a step forward as a potential backup, and acquired Spencer Knight to stabilize the starting goalie position. Now, Brossoit can move on and help a team in need of goaltending insurance.

Brossoit’s future home is very unclear. Although teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, and others need goalies, Brossoit’s $3.3 million cap hit may be too rich for some team’s cap situations. There’s a chance a trade involving Brossoit is either very complex or overly simple. In other words, a three-team trade may be required to get money and assets to even out, or the Hawks may be required to take a simple flier on a late-round pick in exchange for the goaltender.

Right now, the Blackhawks are focusing on the present. A four-game road trip is on deck with the Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings (twice), and Anaheim Ducks. In the meantime, Brossoit will report to Rockford and get his legs under him before getting another shot elsewhere in the league.
