The 23-year-old fired his first NHL goal home against the Calgary Flames — his hometown team — and afterwards, pointed to the sky during his celebration in tribute to his brother, who passed away this year.
“It’s a relief for me,” Wiesblatt said to reporters post-game. “I thought about pointing to the sky for my brother for a while now, and just a cool feeling. Obviously, that one’s for him.”
The goal happened late in the second period as captain Roman Josi skated down the wing with the puck. As he approached the crease, he sent a pass over to Wiesblatt, who shot it past goaltender Devin Cooley as he was driving the net.
Wiesblatt, who was selected 31st overall by the San Jose Sharks at the 2020 NHL Draft, lost his older brother Orca to a car accident.
All three Wiesblatt brothers played hockey, with Oasiz suiting up alongside Ozzy with the Predators’ AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. Orca spent time in the FPHL and SPHL and signed a contract with the ECHL’s Allen Americans prior to his passing.
