Intriguing Detroit Red Wings prospect Max Plante, college hockey’s leading scorer, was named to the preliminary roster for Team USA at the World Junior Championships.

Plante (47th, 2024) is one of nine members of last year’s USA’s team that won the gold medal at WJC. Now a sophomore for the fourth-ranked Minnestoa-Duluth Bulldogs, Plante has 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points on the season.

The Red Wings are also expecting 2025 first-round draft pick Carter Bear (13th, 2025) to be named to the Canadian team and Eddie Genberg (44th, 2025) to play for Sweden.

The 50th anniversary WJC is scheduled for Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul (where the U.S will play its games) and 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis, Minn.

Defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker, trying to earn a place among Detroit’s top six defenseman, got the coaches attention with six blocked shots in a 5-4 win against the Bruins. McLellan said the bench was quite vocal when they saw Bernard-Docker piling up blocks early in the game.

“There’s a big rallying cry from teammates when individuals do that,” McLellan said. “And he was in front of a lot of them and good for him. We need that, we need that from him. That has to be part of his game.”
