A former National Hockey League General Manager has emerged as a potential replacement for Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford.
“My big question is, are you gonna let this management team do the big cuts? I had someone from another team…that said they had heard some rumblings that potentially wholesale changes…management, scouting…could be coming.” Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects said on Sekeres & Price last week.
While it’s unclear when they could happen or what those changes will exactly look like, one can assume that President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford will be a part of it, especially when considering that he’s turning 77 in February.
Former NHL GM could be potential replacement for Vancouver Canucks’ Jim Rutherford
According to Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects, there’s been a lot of talk recently regarding former Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon, with @Buckfoston on X saying that it’s relating to him being a potential replacement for Jim Rutherford.
“Cam Robinson also says there’s a lot of industry chatter about Dale Tallon” @Buckfoston said.
He added, “As a potential Rutherford replacement.”
While he wouldn’t be much of a younger option then Jim Rutherford in the Canucks’ front office, Tallon has plenty of experience as a General Manager and VP/President of Hockey Operations in the National Hockey League that would make him a pretty good choice.
Tallon, who was the very first draft pick in Vancouver Canucks history, being selected second overall in 1970, is currently in his fourth season with the club serving as a Senior Advisor and a Pro Scout, so it would be a fairly easy transition to President of Hockey Operations, whether it’s midseason or during the summer.
The Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec native has served as a General Manager in the National Hockey League for 13 seasons – four with Chicago and nine with Florida – and has a Stanley Cup championship under his belt from his time with the Blackhawks.
It certainly feels like it’s only a matter of time before Jim Rutherford’s tenure with the Vancouver Canucks comes to a close, but it’s going to be interesting to see when that move is made and whether or not the organization considers any external options.
