The Edmonton Oilers aren’t doing too hot at the moment, but they’re getting some good news down in the AHL.

It may not seem like the Bakersfield Condors are having a great season, sitting at a 9-6-4 record through 19 games. Yet, they are getting some outstanding individual efforts from their top players.

Ike Howard has been electric with two goals and seven points in six games, offseason additions Josh Samanski and Viljami Marjala are heating up, and the oft-injured Roby Jarventie has found a way to stay healthy and produce.

None of those players, however, is playing as well as Quinn Hutson is right now. The 23-year-old is tied for fifth in AHL scoring with 12 goals and 21 points in 19 games, and is just one point behind Nick Lardis for the rookie scoring lead.

In his past nine games, Hutson has 10 goals and 18 points, which include two straight two-goal outings.

The undrafted Hutson signed with the Oilers late last season after tearing it up with Boston University in the NCAA. He was considered one of the top college free agents and made his NHL debut in the last two games of the regular season with Edmonton last year.

Though he may never fully eclipse the shadow of his younger brother Lane Hutson, who won the Calder Trophy with the Montreal Canadiens last season, there is no doubt that Quinn possesses quite a bit of talent himself.

Hutson has a smaller frame, standing at just five-foot-11 and 176 pounds. That small stature might make a transition to the NHL game a bit more difficult, but he may force the Oilers’ hand if he continues to score at this pace.

With Jack Roslovic likely out until after Christmas and Edmonton struggling to score goals, there may not be a better time to give Hutson another taste of NHL hockey. Who knows, maybe he can help turn the ship around.
