Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon is hunting the second Hart Trophy of his career.

Right now, he’s the clear leader in the clubhouse for NHL MVP.

ESPN released its December awards watch on Thursday, where insider Greg Wyshynski polls “a wide selection of Professional Hockey Writers Association voters anonymously” to see where they stand on individual honors.

Last month, Nathan MacKinnon received only 10 percent of the first-place votes for the Hart Trophy. This month it jumped to a staggering 82 percent.

“It’s Nathan MacKinnon and by a commanding margin over anyone else I’d consider No. 2 at the moment,” one voter told Wyshynski.

And it makes sense. MacKinnon was the NHL’s First Star of the Month in November, putting up 11 goals and 15 assists, good for 26 points in only 13 games. He added another two goals the other night in a win against Vancouver.

Nathan MacKinnon leads the league in points with 46 and goals with 22. He’s the best player on the clear best team, so it looks like voters aren’t overthinking it right now. That’s a good thing for Avalanche fans.

Elsewhere, Cale Makar is also running away with the Norris Trophy given to the NHL’s best defenseman. He was the unanimous choice amongst those polled to receive the award.

“Start engraving now,” one voter declared to Wyshynski.

Barring injury, Makar is in great shape to capture the third Norris of his career. He has 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) which easily leads all defenseman. Adam Fox of the Rangers and Zach Werenski of the Blue Jackets are tied for second with 26 points.

Finally, out of nowhere, Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood is leading the Vezina Trophy race in this poll. That’s given to the NHL’s best goalie.

“A surprise entry but he’s earned it,” a voter told Wyshynski.

Wedgewood has been brilliant, even if his back is bothering him just a bit right now. He has a 13-1-3 record, .920 save percentage and is giving up only 2.07 goals per game. Mackenzie Blackwood is finally healthy, and playing well, but Wedgewood has taken the league by storm.
