The Edmonton Oilers’ search for goaltending help was confirmed on Saturday night when Elliotte Friedman reported the latest on it during Sportsnet’s “Saturday Headlines” segment.

Friedman shared new details on the Oilers’ reported interest in Pittsburgh Penguins starter Tristan Jarry.

The Oilers were first linked to Jarry by ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, who reported on Nov. 26 that the goaltender was “drawing significant interest” around the NHL, with Edmonton potentially leading the race.

Friedman, however, made it clear that while there is indeed interest, the situation remains difficult for Edmonton to navigate financially.

“There’s legitimate Edmonton interest in Jarry,” Friedman said. “But I think it is extremely complicated and might not be possible, mainly because Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain [a portion of Jarry’s cap hit].”

Jarry carries a $5.375 million cap hit for this season and the next two campaigns. Without salary retention from the Penguins, Edmonton would need to move out significant money, and thus players, in any trade.

Friedman explained how that might make a transaction impossible unless the Penguins ultimately change their stance on salary retention, as the Oilers only have around $159,200 in current cap space.

“It might not be possible because Edmonton would have to do some roster surgery to get it done,” Friedman said. “And right now, because of their own injury and cap situation, they’re really stuck.”

With the Penguins starting the season on the right foot and positioning themselves in postseason contention from the get-go, it’s fair to assume Pittsburgh won’t change its mindset for now.

Jarry, meanwhile, has posted a 9-2-0 record with a .913 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average.

The Oilers are 13-11-5 on the season, good for fourth place in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division with 29 games played, but they have allowed the second-most goals through Saturday with 102 goals against.
