Some new information has emerged about what Kiefer Sherwood’s next contract could potentially look like, with less than eight months until he becomes a free agent.

It hasn’t even been two weeks since Patrik Allvin told General Managers around the league that he’s open for business and teams are already lining up for their chance to acquire Kiefer Sherwood, among them being the Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets – his hometown team, Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Kraken, among others, as reported by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

“Re Kiefer Sherwood: A lot of teams have kicked the tires; Boston and Montreal, I believe Seattle; Columbus.” Pagnotta said.

While a lot of the talk recently involving Kiefer Sherwood has been about a potential trade and not negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks about a new deal, which appear to be non-existent despite Patrik Allvin hoping that the two sides can work something out and last week, some new information has come to light about what the Columbus, Ohio native’s next contract may look like.

NHL insider shares new information about Kiefer Sherwood’s next contract

During an edition of the DFO Rundown podcast last week, NHL insider David Pagnotta that when speaking with those around the game, there’s a belief that Kiefer Sherwood could be looking at $5 million+ annually on his next contract, which would be a huge jump when compared to the $1.5 million he’s earning on his current deal.

Pagnotta went on to add that there’s a possibility that Sherwood’s next contract could be in the five-year range at $5 million or more annually, totalling, at minimum, $25 million USD.

Re Kiefer Sherwood: Talking to people around the league…he’s looking at $5m+ on his next contract; 5 times $5m+? It’s not out of the realm of possibility at all.» Pagnotta said.

With no disrespect to Kiefer Sherwood, that would be a lot of money and term for a team to commit to someone who is turning 31 in late March and hasn’t played much outside of a bottom-six role in his career other than this season in Vancouver due to their injury situation.

However, Sherwood has certainly earned a bump in pay due to his play since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, where he set career-highs in goals, assists and points, as well as breaking the NHL’s single-season record for most hits, finishing the year with 462.
