The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired RHD Roman Schmidt from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for RHD Ethan Samson.

Schmidt, 22, is a towering 6’5″ defenseman who, per EliteProspects, comes in at 218 pounds. He was a former top-100 draft selection by the Lightning, going 96th overall in 2021. Schmidt has spent the last season in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch, as well as 13 games this season, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 total points in 62 games. He made his AHL debut at the end of the 2023-24 season, where he played just one game.

Samson, 22, was injured during Flyers training camp this past season and was activated just less than a month ago. The 6’2″ blueliner has been with the Phantoms for parts of the past three seasons, tallying 15 goals and 25 assists for 40 total points in 142 games in Lehigh Valley. Samson was a 6th-round pick by the Flyers in the 2021 draft.

Flyers general manager Danny Briere has made a flurry of AHL trades this season, including one that sent F Samu Tuomaala to the Dallas Stars organization for RHD Christian Kyrou, who has been lighting it up with the Phantoms. Briere most recently swapped LHD Dennis Gilbert for RHD Maxence Guenette.

How will Briere’s latest AHL swap compare to the past two?
