With the Seattle Kraken potentially moving some pieces this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs could use Mason Marchment as a perfect piece for their top-six.

Sitting with an 11-10-6 record and without a clear direction, the Seattle Kraken may be willing to do business with teams this season. They hold several veterans who could help teams in a playoff push, and have enough space to take on a deal.

Guys like Jared McCann, Kaapo Kakko and Jaden Schwartz are all potential names who could be on the move as they are all on fairly team-friendly deals.

Mason Marchment the perfect target for Toronto to improve top-six

One other name who could be a trade target is Mason Marchment, who is in the final year of his deal after being dealt to the Kraken this past summer. Making only $4.5-million and still a fairly reliable offensive presence, Marchment is a great target for contenders.

A former Maple Leaf, Marchment would fit anywhere in the lineup, but would give Toronto much more reliability up front than Max Domi has, and has the experience edge over Easton Cowan.

While Domi has improved, and Cowan has shown flashes of his offensive brilliance, Marchment would provide a size and physical advantage and would fit perfectly into Craig Berube’s north-south style of hockey.

This season, Marchment has 11 points in 29 games (2 goals, 9 assists) which is a bit of a slower start for him. He is coming off back-to-back 20+ goal seasons, so clearly the offense is there, it just hasn’t come together along with Seattle struggling.

What would the cost be for Toronto to acquire Mason Marchment?

While it wouldn’t cost a truckload, Toronto is going to need to part with at least a couple of their med-range picks, and potentially a player like Maccelli who would give Seattle a lot more control, while offering him more playing time on a nightly basis.

He’s also a restricted free agent, and it doesn’t look as of now the Maple Leafs have him in their future plans, so bringing in Marchment even as a rental is a smarter option for them. Plus, he’s been with the team before and won’t cost too much to re-sign if he ends up working out for the team.

Here’s what a potential Marchment deal for Toronto could look:

(F) Matias Maccelli
(D) John Prokop
2028 3rd-round pick

Toronto washes their hands of Maccelli, give Prokop a chance elsewhere after struggling to find any time with the Marlies, and the pick is a bit of a sweetener, though depending on how desperate Brad Treliving is, he could trade one of his 2026 picks instead.

So we have to wait and see if Seattle is going to wave the white flag and decide to trade their veterans, and if Toronto wants to get in on the action, it might cost them a little bit to do so.
