Gary Bettman and the NHL have announced a sudden rescheduling of a Detroit Red Wings game against the Central Division’s Nashville Predators
What would an NHL season be without random time adjustments and reschedules?
Your Detroit Red Wings team has been a victim of circumstance for a matchup against the Nashville Predators in March.
An announcement on social media today saw Gary Bettman and the NHL roll the time back to 2 P.M. on that day.
Originally scheduled to be a 7 P.M. CT start, you have to wonder what the reasoning for the move was. According to the league, the intent is to capitalize on growing European markets.
It’s been sold to Red Wings and Predators fans as a matinee game on a Monday. The start of the workweek for some of us.
«Coming off the tremendous fan response to the 2025 NHL Global Series Sweden last month, coupled with the huge excitement surrounding NHL players participating in the Olympic Winter Games this coming February, we wanted to provide our international fans the opportunity to see more prime-time hockey during the week,» said Keith Wachtel, President, NHL Business. «This furthers our commitment to deepening our connection with international fans and growth in European markets, while creating a fun and memorable experience for fans in the Nashville market with a unique matinee game.»
The Detroit Red Wings are knocked off of prime time to prioritize fans overseas
While we understand the angle behind this, wouldn’t a weekend event be more suitable for a drastic change like this?
It disempowers both Red Wings and Predators fans, who will miss the game due to it being a Monday matchup in Bridgestone Arena. Can you sell a matinee game to those of us who work a 9-5 schedule?
It’s bad enough that the majority of games are locked behind a paywall compared to the past, when we could catch a game on our local Regional Sports Network.
Now that the model is dead and gone, we’ve arrived at something worse.
This has been the second Red Wings game rescheduled this season; the 1st happened when the team took on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Major League Baseball took primacy.
