A National Hockey League insider believes that the Vancouver Canucks have talked with another team regarding Quinn Hughes, as rumors continue to swirl.

“Once Vancouver announced they were open for business, sent that email around to the league, I do believe there was a conversation, at least one, between the New Jersey Devils and Canucks about Quinn Hughes and I stress, I do not believe there is anything imminent, I don’t even know that they’re anywhere far along. But I do believe that conversation was had about where things stand and where they might be going.” Friedman said.

While it’s still probably too early to say, it wouldn’t shock anyone if the New Jersey Devils are the frontrunner for Quinn Hughes, because his brothers Jack and Luke suit up for the club, but there are other teams interested as well including the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings.

NHL insider believes Vancouver Canucks & Detroit Red Wings have talked about Quinn Hughes

During Monday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman gave an update on Detroit’s interest in Quinn Hughes and said that he believes the Canucks and Red Wings have talked recently about the 26-year-old blueliner.

“I did a podcast interview last week where I talked about Detroit and I do believe that if Vancouver and Detroit wanted to make a deal, I do believe there is a deal to be made there. I also think they’ve talked.” Friedman said.

The Detroit Red Wings have been linked to Quinn Hughes for at least the last week now, with Elliotte Friedman mentioning last week that Steve Yzerman might have leverage over other teams, such as the Philadelphia Flyers, because he has centermen that the Vancouver Canucks would want.”The one thing that Detroit has that Philly doesn’t is – they have a center. I do think when I rank the teams, and I say who can do this and where would Hughes want to go, I would say Detroit’s very high on my list.” Friedman said.

He added, “Can you see [Red Wings exec Steve Yzerman] not being interested in Quinn Hughes? Can you see Quinn Hughes not being interested in Detroit when the time comes? I think they’re very legit, and Detroit has centers, and centers that have been playing in the NHL I think Detroit is a team to watch.”

Among the centermen that Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin could target from the Detroit Red Wings include Nate Danielson and Marco Kasper, the latter of whom they reportedly had interest in leading up to the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, but he was ultimately taken seven spots ahead of where they selected Jonathan Lekkerimaki.

At this stage, again it’s early, but it’s safe to assume that the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils appear to be the favourites for Quinn Hughes, but a lot can change between now and the trade deadline on Friday, March 6th.
