The Buffalo Sabres escaped Edmonton with a 4–3 overtime win on Tuesday night, salvaging two points after surrendering a three-goal lead in a chaotic third period at Rogers Place.
Buffalo struck first late in the opening period on the power play. Rasmus Dahlin’s point shot was redirected by Josh Doan for his ninth goal of the season, shortly after Oilers forward David Tomasek was penalized for goaltender interference. The collision forced Colten Ellis out of the game, bringing Alex Lyon off the bench for a second straight night.
The Sabres dominated the second period and pushed their lead to three despite an early setback. Tage Thompson appeared to score midway through the frame, only for the goal to be overturned due to a missed glove-pass stoppage. Thompson responded minutes later by stripping Evan Bouchard and burying his 14th of the year. Doan added his second of the night on another power play less than a minute later, finishing a highlight-reel between-the-legs move to make it 3-0.
Edmonton countered with a furious push in the third. Connor McDavid scored 10 seconds into the period and Vasily Podkolzin added another shortly after to pull the Oilers within one. Buffalo held on until the final moments, but McDavid struck again with 1.7 seconds remaining to force overtime.
The Sabres didn’t let the collapse define the night. Just 33 seconds into the extra frame, Alex Tuch finished a feed from Ryan McLeod to seal the win and cap a chaotic but rewarding road performance for Buffalo.
Buffalo continues its six-game road trip on Thursday in Vancouver against the Canucks, with puck drop slated for 10 p.m.
