Quinn Hughes’ time in Vancouver may be up, and while there’s some obvious contenders to land him, now a left field option has been suggested.

For weeks now, it appears that many in Vancouver have begun accepting the fate of their incredibly talented captain, and while they’d love to keep him long-term, getting assets in return may ultimately be the best move for the Canucks front office.

That’s led to several teams showing immense interest, with the most obvious candidate to land Hughes being the New Jersey Devils, the home of his two brothers Jack and Luke.

On top of that, the likes of the Detroit Red Wings have been heavily interested in adding Hughes, as they are the team that likely have the biggest need for him as well as the assets to acquire him.

Now however, top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has discussed Hughes’ future, suggesting a surprising team that may pursue the Canucks captain; the Washington Capitals.

One team I’ve wondered about a little bit…was Washington; they’re a team I could see say, you know what, we’ll take our chances.

At first glance, the Capitals don’t make much sense, but with prospects such as Andrew Cristall, Cole Hutson and Ilya Protas, they could put together an intriguing package that could tempt the Vancouver Canucks.

Adding Hughes to this lineup alongside Alex Ovechkin in potentially the final year of his career would give this team a major boost, and while the Capitals can’t be considered the favourite to land him, the mere suggestion from Friedman is intriguing, and could be an option that nobody saw coming.
