LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners recognized the Leonardtown High School Girls Varsity Field Hockey team Tuesday for winning the 2025 Maryland Class 4A state championship, celebrating a season defined by persistence and years of development that led to victory.

Commissioner Eric Colvin said the team’s visit was one of the highlights of the year.

“We have the Leonardtown High School Girls Field Hockey team state champions here with us this morning,” Colvin said. “This is always an exciting morning for us when we can celebrate like this, it is definitely one of the highlights of the year for us.”

Colvin presented a St. Mary’s County proclamation that honored head coach Chris Mitchell, her assistant coaches and the full roster of varsity athletes for their work in bringing home the state title. It credited the team’s success to hard work, dedication and strong support from families, school staff and team managers. The official document was signed by all five county commissioners.

“The team’s success is attributed to their hard work, dedication to excellence and unwavering determination,” Colvin said, reading the proclamation. “[It] would not have been possible without the support of their parents, school community, coaches, athletic trainers and team managers.”

Mitchell told commissioners the championship was the product of years of steady progress, including new turf fields, which she said played an important role in developing the team long before players reached high school.

“It has been years in the making for these young ladies,” Mitchell said. “The implementation of the turf fields in the county years ago has been a huge key factor in the development of these girls’ skills.”
