Despite nearly blowing a 4-0 lead, the Red Wings held off a late push from the Calgary Flames, who are the winners of three straight coming into this game. The first two periods saw more incredible play from John Gibson, who has now won his last four starts. The game saw Detroit’s second line of Andrew Copp, Alex DeBrincat, and Patrick Kane take over, factoring in on three of the four Red Wings goals.
Red Wings Hold on in Third Period:
After another turnover at the blue line on the power play from rookie Sandin-Pellikka, Joel Farabee was hooked, leading to a penalty shot. Only 1:05 seconds after Farabee converted his penalty shot, Matt Coronato would score to cut the deficit to two. Again, later in the period, MacKenzie Weeger would score his second of the season through a screened Gibson to bring the game within one.
Detroit would hold off the Flames final push with big minutes from Moritz Seider. Rookie Emmitt Finnie made a veteran effort along the boards to kill around thirty seconds by holding the puck along the wall. The effort would lead to the Red Wings denying Calgary at the blue line and ultimately snuffing out the Flames comeback attempts.
Edvinsson Injured:
Simon Edvinsson picked up an injury on a blocked shot in the second period. The young defenceman was playing alongside Moritz Seider on the top pair and has been a crucial part of the team’s blue line. With Detroit heading to Edmonton tomorrow, it is possible Edvinsson was shut down in the game primarily for rest reasons. It did not look like anything was broken, and Detroit was at a comfortable position in the game. Currently, he is a game-time decision for tomorrow.
Detroit’s Second Line Continues Hot Streak:
Andrew Copp and Patrick Kane picked up two assists each, while Alex DeBrincat punched in his fifteenth and sixteenth goals of the season, as well as adding a cross-ice assist to Axel Sandin-Pellikka. Andrew Copp continues to bring out the best in the duo, finishing the night as a +3.
Red Wings Face Oilers
Detroit will play their fifth of six road games against the Edmonton Oilers. Connor McDavid has ten points in his last five games, including six goals. Edmonton is 4-4-2 in their last ten and coming off an overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
