Detroit Red Wings: ‘Up and down’ performance in win at Seattle

Detroit Red Wings Andrew Copp, Patrick Kane, James van Riemsdyk & Todd McLellan, Dec. 6, 2025 in Seattle.

The Detroit Red Wings have called up defenseman Erik Gustafsson to have available as they head into their penultimate stop on a six-game road trip.

The team announced the roster move on Thursday, Dec. 11, hours ahead of taking on the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. The Wings, who at 17-11-3 lead the Atlantic Division, lost Simon Edvinsson to an undisclosed injury during Wednesday’s 4-3 victory at the Calgary Flames. Fellow defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker was also unavailable for the game against the Flames.

Edvinsson logged 14:37 of ice time and did not appear in the third period.

Gustafsson has appeared in one game for the Wings this season. He was placed on waivers before the season began and, after clearing, was assigned to the minors. Gustafsson played 60 games for the Wings in 2024-25, recording two goals, 16 assists and a minus-19 rating.

He lost his spot in the lineup when rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka (who had a goal and an assist against the Flames) used training camp and the exhibition season to demonstrate he was ready for the NHL.
