SHAWANO, WI – Shawano Boys Hockey is weighing a potential shift to the Great Northern Conference, a move that would provide the co-op with a stable and consistent league schedule after competing independently in recent seasons. The change would place Shawano in an established eight-team conference that includes Tomahawk, Mosinee, Antigo, Lakeland, Northland Pines, Waupaca, Medford and Rhinelander, a league highlighted last year by Tomahawk’s unbeaten conference run and Division 2 state championship.
School officials say discussions are still underway, and no final decisions have been reached at the local level. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Board of Control is expected to rule on all conference realignment proposals during its March meeting.
The proposal, if approved, would affect only the boys hockey program.
