The Pittsburgh Penguins trade involving goaltender Tristan Jarry is big news, but not the only player news on Friday. The team also activated winger Rickard Rakell off IR and designated defenseman Matt Dumba as non-roster in advance of putting him on waivers later Friday afternoon.
The Rakell news, in particular, is impactful. He had surgery on a broken left wrist in October after a strong start to the season. Playing on the top line with Sidney Crosby, Rakell had three goals, eight points in nine games before he took a shot off his wrist. The Penguins have been experimenting with his spot on that line since.
It would seem likely that Rakell will return to the lineup Saturday afternoon when the San Jose Sharks visit PPG Paints Arena. He has been practicing in a full capacity this week.
The move with Dumba opens a roster spot. In his first season with the Penguins, he has a goal and two assists in 11 games playing sporadically on the third pairing. He can be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League if he is not claimed by another team by 2 p.m. Saturday.
