Saturday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings wasn’t pretty for the Chicago Blackhawks without Connor Bedard.

Bedard might be out for a significant amount of time.

The third-year center was ruled out after suffering a shoulder injury at the end of Friday night’s loss to the St. Louis Blues. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill called the injury a “freak accident.”

Without their leader in points (44), the Blackhawks suffered a 4-0 loss to the Red Wings in front of 20,751 fans at the United Center.

Before the game, Blashill said Bedard was still being evaluated. He expected to have more information on Monday. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman provided a dour outlook for Chicago.

While the Blackhawks are awaiting the results of the MRI Bedard had on Saturday, he is not expected to return to start the three-game road trip in Canada next week. Chicago will travel to play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday before ending the week with the Montreal Canadiens (Thursday, and Ottawa Senators (Saturday).

Per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times, Blashill confirmed Bedard is not expected to play for the entire three-game road trip.

“Blashill confirmed he doesn’t anticipate Connor Bedard playing on this 3-game road trip,” Pope posted on X.

The Blackhawks were hanging on a thread for the postseason hunt before Bedard’s injury. They didn’t look like a contender on Saturday night without him after being shut out by Detroit.

All three of Chicago’s next opponents will have better than .500 records.

Nick Lardis, who was called up to play for Bedard was a minus-2 on the ice against the Red Wings.
