BOSTON – Trailing by one with less than two minutes to play, the No. 20 Boston University men’s ice hockey team scored twice in a span of 18 seconds to defeat No. 11 Northeastern, 4-3, in the final game at historic Matthews Arena.

With the goalie pulled, sophomore Kamil Bednarik tied the game for BU (9-8-1, 6-5-0 HE) with 1:57 remaining in regulation before classmate Brandon Svoboda’s sensational individual effort just moments later gave the Terriers their first lead of the game over Northeastern (10-6-0, 5-4-0 HE). The Huskies pulled Lawton Zacher (31 saves) to try and equalize but sophomore Mikhail Yegorov (18 saves) and the Terriers held on for the victory.

Svoboda finished the night with two goals while sophomore Sacha Boisvert also found the back of the net. Sophomore Nick Roukounakis assisted on both of Svoboda’s goals while senior Owen McLaughlin, junior captain Gavin McCarthy, sophomore Cole Eiserman, and freshmen Jonathan Morello, Malte Vass and Charlie Trethewey all chipped in one assist apiece.

BU closed Matthews with a 347-177-19 record at the building, including a 306-158-11 record when the Terriers called then-Boston Arena home from 1918-71 before moving to Walter Brown Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Northeastern scored 11:37 into the proceedings and then made it 2-0 at the 14:37 mark.
The Terriers got a goal back with 2:20 to play in the opening frame off a Morello faceoff win. Roukounakis knocked the puck forward and Svoboda found a way past Zacher.
Boisvert evened the score with left in the second. McLaughlin dished the puck to Vass, who drew the Northeastern defense in his direction. That allowed Boisvert to skate unopposed to the right post, where Vass found him with the perfect pass that led to Boisvert’s second strike of the season.
Northeastern capitalized on a turnover to retake the lead, 3-2, in the final seconds of the stanza.
The Huskies received a penalty shot with 9:39 remaining in regulation, but Yegorov did well to force Joe Connor into a shot that whistled high off the glass.
BU had a power-play chance in the late stages of the third that Northeastern killed to keep its 3-2 advantage.
The Terriers then pulled Yegorov with 3:08 on the clock after winning an offensive-zone faceoff and Bednarik scored moments later. McCarthy dished the puck to Eiserman for a one-timer that Zacher turned aside. Bednarik was in perfect position to knock home the rebound, however, for his fifth goal of the season.
Just 18 seconds later, Svoboda gave the Terriers their first lead of the night. Roukounakis flipped the puck high ahead to Svoboda, who knocked it down at the NU blue line. He then dangled through a defender, shifted around him and on one leg ripped home his fourth goal of the season.
Northeastern attempted to tie the game, but Yegorov made one save and Svoboda blocked the only other attempt to preserve the win.
