The Florida Panthers shrugged off Thursday night’s one-sided loss in Denver, delivering a gem of a road game in a dominant 4-0 victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center to sweep the season series against the league’s second best team.
After a low event first period that saw the teams combine for just four shots, Anton Lundell opened the scoring 19 seconds into the middle frame when he took a pass from Eetu Luostarinen and somehow kept possession of the puck while splitting Alexander Petrovic and Sam Steel. Lundell’s effort took him below the goal line, but he was still able to deposit the puck past Jake Oettinger, who had come out to challenge. Sam Reinhart drew the secondary assist on the play.
The Panthers would go up by two at the 5:45 mark. Florida regained the zone after a mishandle by Seth Jones, with Brad Marchand sending Carter Verhaeghe back over the line on the left side. Verhaeghe created some space for himself, put a routine shot on the Oettinger and the rebound struck Kyle Capobianco before finding the back of the net off the side of a crashing Sam Bennett’s lower leg.
Marchand and Reinhart would get their second points of the period as the Cats took a commanding three-goal lead with a pretty power-play goal at the 19:45 mark. After Jones had his shot blocked by Esa Lindell, Reinhart tried to sweep the puck through the defenseman to no avail. He reclaimed the puck and sent a no-look backhand pass to Marchand, who fired a wrister by the glove of Oettinger from the right circle.
Luostarinen drew the interference call on Ilya Lyubushkin that put Florida on the man-advantage. Breaking away and hitting the cross bar.
All that was left was for Sergei Bobrovsky to make six more saves and Marchand to sling the biscuit into an empty net from Lundell with 2:48 left in regulation to complete the scoring.
The Panthers sixth road win of the season was probably their best thus far. The top-six carried the play offensively, a stout defensive effort limited the Stars to a mere 15 shots on goal and they went a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill while inserting the dagger with a power-play strike late in the second to put it away. Job well done!
The Five Hole
First Star Brad Marchand now has 18 goals and 34 points after notching the last two markers of the game and adding an assist. He leads the team in both of those categories and is tied with Anton Lundell with 16 assists.
Lundell has scored the game-winning goal in each of Florida’s victories on this road trip. He is up to 25 points after a goal and assist against Dallas. Lundell had a strong night in the dot, winning 66.7% of his draws.
Sergei Bobrovsky posted his 52nd career shutout to pass former Panther Tomas Vokoun and tie Tuukka Rask for the sixth-most in NHL history by a goalie born outside of North America.
Thanks to his two helpers, Sam Reinhart became the second Panther to reach the 30-point plateau this season. Reinhart tied Scott Mellanby (344) for sixth all-time on Florida’s points roll.
Mackie Samsokevich was one of five players to register three shots on goal and his three hits matched Stars Colin Blackwell and Roope Hintz for the game-high.
