The Vancouver Canucks may have the perfect candidate to take over the captaincy from Quinn Hughes following his trade to the Minnesota Wild on Friday.

It’s not a fun time to be a Vancouver Canucks fan at the moment as the club sits dead last in the National Hockey League’s overall standings with just 11 wins in 31 games and on Friday night, following months and months of rumors about his future with the club, traded their now-former captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

“Confirming. Vancouver Canucks Trade Quinn Hughes to Minnesota Wild for Minnesota Wild’s 1st round pick in the 2026 NHL draft, Marco Rossi, Liam Öhgren and Zeev Buium.” Darren Dreger said on X on Friday night.

With Quinn Hughes now no longer a member of the Vancouver Canucks organization, which still sounds surreal to even say, it means the club is without a captain for the first time since January through September of 2023 following the trade of Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders.

As was the case when Bo Horvat was traded, it’s unlikely that the Vancouver Canucks will name a new captain this season and will probably wait until training camp in September 2026.

On Saturday, Adam Foote told reporters that he hasn’t thought about who could be the team’s next captain, but did add that Filip Hronek will now join the leadership group and have an ‘A’ on his chest for certain games throughout the remainder of the 2025-26 season, joining Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson and Tyler Myers.

“Adam Foote says he hasn’t had an opportunity to chat with management about naming a captain with the C vacated after the Quinn Hughes trade.

Foote says that Filip Hronek will wear an “A” in the meantime.” Thomas Drance of The Athletic shared on social media.

Whether or not someone gets the ‘C’ this season remains to be seen, but one potential candidate, as suggested by The Hockey News’ Adam Kierszenblat, is veteran defenseman Tyler Myers, but down the road he believes the eventual captain of this franchise will be 2025 first round pick Braeden Cootes.

“Just gonna throw this out there. If the #Canucks are gonna name a new captain this year, it should be Tyler Myers.” Kierszenblat said.

He add, “I think Braeden Cootes is the guy who eventually becomes captain but based on the current #Canucks roster, Tyler Myers makes the most sense if they want to name a captain right away.”

Myers, 35, has close to 1,100 games of experience in the National Hockey League, more than anyone else on the Vancouver Canucks’ roster and with that said, combined with the fact he’s been part of the leadership group for a while, as Kierszenblat says, it does make the most sense and don’t be surprised if he’s given serious consideration by Adam Foote & the coaching staff whenever they hold those discussions.
