The process may have been different, but the result was the same. The Flyers had to rally back from the 2-0 deficit in Sunday night’s version of their matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes, and were able to do it with just under two minutes to play in the third.
But once again, the success after regulation wasn’t there. For the second straight night, the Flyers were defeated in a shootout, with the lone goal going to Andrei Svechnikov in a 3-2 loss to Carolina.
The Hurricanes got on the board early at 5:44. William Carrier scored his third goal of the season on a high shot over Dan Vladar from the slot to make it 1-0.
At 15:53, the Hurricanes extended the lead. Taylor Hall deflected a shot from Alexander Nikishin to make it 2-0 on his seventh goal of the season on the power play.
In the final minute of the first, the Flyers cut the lead to one. On a delayed penalty call, Jamie Drysdale got a shot through off the stick of Carrier and past Brandon Bussi to make it 2-1.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 14-4 Carolina.
There was no scoring in the second, but not for a lack of chances, as both teams were able to get quality opportunities. Shots were 23-11 Carolina after the second.
The Flyers really poured it on in the third, taking 15 shots and more than doubling their total for the game. With just 1:52 to play, the Flyers finally got the elusive equalizer.
Trevor Zegras finished into an empty net off a nice pass by Travis Konecny to tie the game at two with his 13th of the season.
The Flyers had to survive a penalty in overtime just to force the shootout. Svechnikov’s goal came in the second round, as Zegras hit the post and Christian Dvorak and Matvei Michkov were both stopped.
Vladar made 30 saves on 32 shots in the loss. Bussi made 24 saves on 26 shots in the win, his ninth straight and 11th in 12 games.
Zegras had two points for the Flyers.
The Flyers continue the road trip on Tuesday night, taking on the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m.
