Wisconsin-Superior men’s hockey’s first meeting with the first-year Beloit program was a productive one for the Yellowjackets, who swept their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series on Friday and Saturday, 3-1 and 6-3 in Janesville, Wisconsin.
A.J. Reed’s goal gave UWS an early lead, with Tyler Ryder adding a second on the power play in the following period, but the ending still got a little adventurous after Beloit scored on the power play with 2:25 to make it a one-goal game until Kade Shea’s late empty-netter.
Jack Boschert made 18 saves for UWS, which held a 36-19 shot advantage.
On Saturday, UWS had a rough first period, giving up three goals in a span of 4 ½ minutes. Carson Riddle had one in the same span for the Yellowjackets, but they were still 3-1 down at the first intermission.
Back-to-back minor penalties on the Buccaneers led to back-to-back power play goals by Justin Dauphinais and Collin Pederson as UWS tied the game early in the second period, then took the lead on Austin Paul’s even-strength goal less than four minutes later. Reed and Pederson added insurance goals in the third as UWS raised its record to 7-5-1, 3-3-0 in WIAC play.
UWS will meet Beloit again in its first game after the holiday break, on Jan. 7 in Superior.
Cobbers keep UWS offense down
Concordia-Moorhead held Wisconsin-Superior to just one goal in each game of a nonconference weekend series on Friday and Saturday in Moorhead, winning 3-1 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday.
Friday, Kendal Gustavsson (Hibbing/Chisholm) scored on the power play to make it a 1-1 game in the second period, but Jaclyn Lloyd’s goal put the Cobbers back in front late in the frame, and was followed by an empty-netter in the third period.
Jayda Moyer made 26 saves for UWS.
On Saturday, Aylie Dahl got the Yellowjackets on the board late in the second period, but by that point, they were already down 3-0.
Moyer finished with 34 saves.
UWS goes into the holiday break with a 1-10-0 record and will resume with a home-and-home series vs. Saint Benedict that will open Jan. 2 in Superior.
Wisconsin-Superior shot just 29% from the floor on Saturday and dropped a 68-49 nonconference contest to Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
UWEC never trailed and first pushed the lead into double digits with 4:32 left in the first half despite only going 13-for-34 (38.2%) themselves in the period. After leading 33-23 at halftime, UWEC grew its advantage well into the 20s before the benches closed it out for both sides.
Evan Bennett finished with a game-high 18 points for UWS (2-8), which will host Bethel on Saturday, Dec. 20.
Stevens Point too strong for UWS
Hope Carlson (Proctor) had 20 points off the bench for Wisconsin-Superior but it wasn’t enough to avoid a 66-49 nonconference defeat at the hands of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Pointers made five first-half 3-pointers and were 14-for-26 from the floor to take a 38-21 lead into halftime. A short UWS run made it a 14-point game in the third quarter, but no better.
Duluth East alum Rachel Hagen had five points and three rebounds in a reserve role for the unbeaten Pointers.
UWS (2-7) will take two weeks off before a two-game tournament at Wisconsin-Oshkosh beginning Dec. 28.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
