The Vancouver Canucks have announced a roster move on Sunday morning involving injured forward Elias Pettersson ahead of their game against the New Jersey Devils.

Injuries issues have been a big problem for the Vancouver Canucks all season long and earlier this month ahead of their game against the Minnesota Wild, the club lost forward Elias Pettersson with an upper-body injury, which required him to undergo an MRI to determine the full extent of what he’s dealing with.

Vancouver Canucks make roster move involving injured forward Elias Pettersson

On Friday night, the Vancouver Canucks shocked the hockey world by trading captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild and among the pieces they got in return was Austrian centerman Marco Rossi, who has been dealing with an injury of his own and hasn’t played since November 11th against the San Jose Sharks.

Thankfully for the Canucks, Marco Rossi is good to go today against the New Jersey Devils and will make his Vancouver debut on the top line, but in order to make room for him on the active roster, General Manager Patrik Allvin had to place Elias Pettersson on injured reserve (IR), retroactive to Friday, December 5th.

“General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Elias Pettersson has been placed on IR (retroactive to Dec. 5) and F Marco Rossi has been activated from IR.” the Canucks said on X.

The decision to place Elias Pettersson on injured reserve is pretty simple, and while he might not be able to play today, it also buys the Canucks another day to figure out who they want to send down when he’s ready to return and also have Marco Rossi available for today’s game.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the days ahead but with Elias Pettersson’s placement on IR retroactive to December 5th, he can return to the active roster tomorrow if the Vancouver Canucks wish, but it’ll likely mean that one of Max Sasson, Linus Karlsson or Arshdeep Bains is going down to Abbotsford, the latter two of whom would require waivers.
