The Alexandria girls hockey team put its scoring depth and resiliency on display last week.

The Cardinals rolled to a lopsided 6-1 victory over Brainerd-Little Falls on Thursday, Dec. 11 before nearly completing a comeback against Roseau, only to fall in overtime by a final of 4-3 on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Taking on Brainerd/Little Falls on Dec. 11, Alexandria wasted no time getting on the board, as Emily Doherty scored the game’s first goal only 12 seconds into the game to set the tone. The early strike sparked a five-goal first period, with Hensley Carlson, Anna Korynta, Quinn Hills and Bentley Kriel all finding the net before the opening frame ended.

Brainerd/Little Falls’ lone response came near the midway point of the first period as Harper Moore scored off assists from Elsie Haakonson and Avery Wikoff, but the Warriors were unable to keep up the Cardinals’ quick pace offensively. Following a scoreless middle period, Korynta added her second goal of the night inside the final two minutes of the third to finish the scoring.

Alexandria outshot Brainerd/Little Falls 30-14, as Jersey Severson and Emma Bassen added assists in the game. Kriel finished with two assists in addition to her goal and Victoria Meyers earned the win in net with 13 saves.

Facing off against Roseau, Ella Ketring put the Rams up first in the opening period off assists from Lauren Byfuglien and Launa Ullman. Ullman collected a second assists on Jasmine Hovda’s second-period goal on the power play to extend the lead for the Cardinals’ opponents.

However, Alexandria answered with a strong push late in the middle frame, as Korynta scored off assists from Payton Revering and Maya Dutton before Carlson tied it with two minutes left in the frame as Dutton picked up her second helper of the period.

The Cardinals grabbed their first lead early in the third when Dutton scored with 10 minutes left in the game, but Hovda answered with a short-handed goal inside the four-minute mark to force overtime. In the extra session, Roseau ended it in just two seconds as Hovda completed the hat trick.

Roseau held a slim 30-28 edge in shots but went 1-of-3 on the power play while Alexandria was 0-of-3 on the advantage in addition to allowing the short-handed goal. Dutton finished with two assists in the game while Payton Revering collected an assist.

In net, Madalyn Lisell stopped 25 shots for the Rams to pick up the win while Meyers picked up 26 saves in the loss.

Alexandria (7-4) returns to action next with a home game against Detroit Lakes at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at the Runestone Community Center.
