Detroit — Jonatan Berggren’s future with the Red Wings is looking a little grimmer.
Berggren was put on waivers by the Wings on Monday, after seeing little time in the lineup over the last several weeks. If no other team claims Berggren by Tuesday’s 2 p.m. deadline, Berggren can be assigned to the minor-league affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.
Berggren, 25, played Thursday in Edmonton, his first appearance in the lineup since Nov. 24. He has two goals and four assists for six points, in only 15 games, with a minus-three plus-minus rating, while averaging just under 12 minutes (11 minutes 59 seconds) of ice time.
Berggren scored 15 goals in 67 games as a rookie three seasons ago, but never has been able to recapture that kind of production, or ability to stay in the lineup, since then. He spent the majority of the season in Grand Rapids two seasons ago, and had 12 goals in 75 games with the Wings last season.
Berggren is on a one-year contract worth $1.825 million and is eligible to become a restricted free agent on July 1. He’s a 2018 second-round draft pick (33rd overall) of the Wings.
