As the news broke, Red Wings fans were quick to scramble to try to find out why the Wild were the team that got Hughes instead of them. However, after the move, Friedman broke the news that the Red Wings were only one piece away from being able to get Hughes.

The piece was Simon Edvinsson. The young defenseman for the Red Wings was the piece that, according to all sources from Ryan Hana to Elliott Friedman, has pretty much confirmed it. It’s sparked some debate if the deal would be worth it if Detroit added Edvinsson. If you want my thoughts, they’ll be on this week’s podcast episode (hey, I gotta get my views somehow). However, as it stands, until some other news breaks, Simon Edvinsson stopped Detroit from getting Hughes.

Friedman on 32TP says Red Wings could not get the deal done with Vancouver for Quinn Hughes because the Canucks wanted something the Wings were not willing to include in the deal, Friedman doesn’t know what that is but suspects it was Edvinsson.

It’s a good sign for Red Wings fans if Steve Yzerman believes that Simon Edvinsson is so good he wouldn’t risk Hughes on it. However, the Red Wings fans who are disappointed by this news aren’t alone, and plenty of big names in Red Wings spaces also agree that this might end up being a pretty big whiff.

Fortunately, the Red Wings have had great performances from Axel Sandin-Pellikka, the young offensive defenseman who might be heir to the point-producing-defender throne. All in all, the trade is nothing but retrospective now, but with Hughes mentioning he wanted to be near Michigan, it’ll be hard to make it hurt less.
