Detroit Red Wings goalie John Gibson has stopped the bleeding. Now, all he stops are pucks.
So far in December, Gibson has compiled a 5-0-0 record with a 2.00 goals-against average, a .940 save percentage, and two shutouts in five starts.
The past week saw Gibson post a pair of shutouts in his three starts, going 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .971 save percentage. That performance earned him the NHL’s Second Star of the Week.
Connor McDavid, John Gibson and Joel Eriksson Ek have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Dec. 14.

When a goalie is struggling, their playing style is frenetic. They are a bundle of movement. Lacking confidence, they overcompensate by moving too quickly in the net, ultimately taking themselves out of position.
This is what they mean when they say that a goalie is fighting the puck.
By comparison, a goalie who’s on top of their game is quiet in their movements. The puck seems to find them, and it sticks to their torso. Rebounds are few and far between.
Kind of like Gibson has looked between the posts all month long.
“I think I’m getting to where I want to be,” Gibson said. “Just want to be more consistent night in, night out.
“So I think I’m doing that.”
Red Wings Goalie Finds His Form
Red Wings coach Todd McLellan summed up the difference in his goalie of late. “Just looks like Gibby,” McLellan said.
“He’s confident. The guys feel really good about playing around him. There’s less pucks coming off him, more whistles. Very efficient.”

Before December, Gibson, in his first season with the Red Wings after 12 years with the Anaheim Ducks, was clearly in a funk. He went winless in November, going 0-5-1 in six decisions between October 31 and November 28.
The turnaround in his performance played a significant role in Detroit’s 4-1-1 record on the club’s recently completed road trip.
“I’d say it starts with goaltending,” Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. “And Gibby was great on the trip, and so was Talbs (Cam Talbot).”
