Minnesota Wild acquire point producing defenseman, Quinn Hughes, amid swirling trade rumors

  • December 16, 2025

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Valley News Live) – The Vancouver Canucks have let go of their 26-year-old captain, Quinn Hughes, and sent him to the Minnesota Wild in a blockbuster Friday night trade.

In return for the nearly point-per-game defenseman, the Wild will send center Marco Rossi, defenseman Zeev Buium, winger Liam Ohgren, and a first-round pick.

After signing Kirill Kaprizov to the richest contract in NHL history, this trade signals General Manager, Bill Guerin’s, eagerness to bring hardware to Minnesota. The Minnesota Wild have not made it beyond the first round of the playoffs since 2015.

The former Canuck was selected in the first-round of the 2018 draft and is widely considered the best defenseman in the league. With 23 points in 26 games, the blueliner adds some scoring power to the point for Minnesota as the Wild sit third in the Central Division with one game behind the Dallas Stars.

According to sources, the New Jersey Devils did make a bid for Hughes in an attempt to roster him along side his two brothers, Luke and Jack Hughes. However, the Devils couldn’t match the haul that Minnesota was willing to let go of in exchange for the defenseman.
